I have a friend who emails me precisely the weekend before Thanksgiving and asks me to list the five things he should tell his family he wants for the holidays. What started off as a joke has now become a tradition among friends. My friend explains it simply as “Courtney picks out s**t for me that I wouldn’t and my wife and family couldn’t.” If that isn’t a ringing endorsement than I don’t know what you are looking for!
I think gifts for guides should be a mix of stuff you know they would want, stuff you know you want them to want and stuff that will leave his family slightly puzzled on why. Trust me, it works…….
You know what else works? That everything on this list is under $100 and can be bought online. No need to schlep to the mall, drive aimlessly for a parking spot and then scarf down an Auntie Anne’s pretzel with cheese sauce out of pure frustration. You can kick back and shop for that special lad in the comfort of your own home! Now turn back on Netflix with the smug knowledge that you have yet again outsmarted the masses….
I like to shop but I hate crowds. I would rather punch myself repeatedly around the eyes, nose and throat than deal with the hordes of shoppers looking to score a deal. Instead, I will be at home, nursing a rather large delicious treat as I watch movies on Netflix. Why will I be so stress-free you ask? It’s because I will be doing my shopping online and having UPS and Fed Ex act as my little gift elves delivering retail happiness to friends and family across the nation.
If you are of sane mind and lack the will of a mother lion looking to protect her young, then I encourage you to join me on the proverbial couch and relax. But like I have all this week, I am not leaving you to your own devices to twist in the cruel retail winds. My staff and I have pulled together different gift guides each with a different focus. Even better is that everything on them is under $100!
So let’s get this baby rolling with the first gift guide – Stylish Finds for the Sassy Lass curated by my assistant Michelle who is one uber-stylish lady ….
I love Michelle’s picks and have ordered a few things for my sister from this list. Now if you excuse me, there is a piece of pie and a hunky Norse god that goes by Thor awaiting my arrival on the couch. Happy Shopping……
I have a love/hate relationship with Restoration Hardware lighting. I love the overall look of the pieces but their scale is so massive that unless you live in a castle, realistically they can’t be used. I know I say “go big, or go home” but even I have my limits when it comes to lighting fixtures…..
However, a friend tipped me off to Restoration Hardware’s baby and children line which features more delicate (aka normal) sized fixtures. Looking through the web site, I was smitten by their vintage illuminated arrow fixture:
I would love to see the piece in a kitchen or perhaps two in a bedroom flanking a bed. It is a fun way to add lighting and sculptural interest to a space in a fun unexpected way. I am pitching a client on using them in his library, so fingers crossed …..
So tell me, what is the wackiest light you have ever seen in a space?
