Last Weekend of Freedom…..

School officially starts for me next Sunday (August 22).

My new home away from home.....

That means my world officially changes in multiple ways.  No more lazy days at home thinking up DIY design projects or fussing over how to decorate the house.  Starting next week, it will be all about learning about food safety and product specifics.

I am excited and scared about this new journey.  All the first day of school jitters are settling into the pit of my stomach…who will I have lunch with?  Will they like me?  Am I going to fit in?  Of course, at 34 years old, I shouldn’t be worrying about such things, but I am only human.  My hope is that I just don’t burn the kitchen down or embarrass myself the first day.  Fortunately, it is over a month before we even step foot into the class kitchens.  We spend a solid month learning the basics in a classroom setting in BUSINESS CASUAL attire.  Yes…business casual attire.  I received a full booklet on “Dressing for Success at the CIA” in my orientation packet.  Looks like I will be pulling out my work clothes …. haven’t worn them in a year.  Hope they fit still.

One bummer is that I am in the afternoon class schedule once we go into the kitchen.  That means that I will be in class from 2:30-8:00pm every day (Monday – Friday) which is a bummer for commuting back down to Oakland on the weekends.  I am hoping that they tweak the schedule accordingly cause I can’t imagine anyone being happy to be in class at 8pm on a Friday EVERY week.

I am mentally prepping myself for the transition to academic mode.  This also means that this blog is going to change slightly.  I know that for the last two months, it has been heavily design and DIY focused.  Trust me …..my weekends will still be filled with fun design stuff, but I just want to warn you that there will be less of it.  So prepare yourself for talk about wine and food pairings, feelings of inadequacy, elated blubbering on well executed dishes and the usual dramas associated with school.  But all with witty comments and cool pictures……welcome to your insiders guide to culinary school.

To kick off the insider’s sneak peek…..here is my class schedule for the entire program…..

  1. I’m totally laughing at the idea of “meat fabrication” – sounds like genetic engineering – did you ever see the Better Off Ted episode with the beef in the petri dish? and the taste tester saying “tastes like despair”?

  2. Ahhhhhh! I am sooo jealous and so proud of you all at the same time! I cannot wait to hear all about your adventures at culinary school. Count on my living vicariously through you every step of the way!

  3. Wow, evening classes. You have my sympathy. I had a number of classes at Davis that went to 6pm and even 8pm – with a nasty 2 hour commute home to top it off.

You’ll get through it! I can’t wait to read about your adventures!
